I had a conversation with a “marketing guru” who told me that fine art is a piece of art valued at over $10,000. He was an arrogant soul, but it was kind of fun to explore what he didn’t know and exactly how much he did not know it. The discussion made me think, though, about whether or not I could define it. Out of negative experiences come the positives!
As we all know our definitions grow, and change. As a noun fine art is defined as
- Creative art, especially visual art, whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content. And, 2. An activity requiring great skill or accomplishment.
When an artist creates a commission painting for a client, it’s not the artist’s point of view. It’s what the clients want. The piece isn’t created to please the artist. It is created to please the client. So, a commission painting is visual art. Visual art is defined by Wikipedia as “Art forms that create works that are primarily visual in nature.” This is exactly why I don’t like boxes. Fine art is visual art. From conception it is created to be seen. Monet created this painting of a pond. Beside it is Damien Hirst’s Shark. Both are visual art. But what was the motivation to create them?
There is quite the controversy over this question. Visual art is a very broad term and encompasses more than just art forms. My sister creates quilts. She creates stunning art and I am fortunate to have 2 of her pieces. They were created to be appreciated for their imaginative, aesthetic qualities. Lucky for me they are enjoyed by me!
I am not trying to define anything in this blog. I am trying to educate myself, answer questions regarding art because the learning is fun. I want my own self to be somewhat aware of changes in art, and keep up to date. The line between what is fine art and what is visual art is certainly not going to be settled today. My next blog will continue this discussion!
I would love to hear your thoughts!
